Artist statement
My name is Julie Perryman, and I am a mixed media artist based in the town of Highland, Indiana. My current body of work is a testament to my boundless creativity and unwavering passion for the natural world. Utilizing a combination of acrylic, alcohol inks, watercolors, and ink, I bring a kaleidoscope of vivid colors and textures to the canvas, paper, and Yupo surfaces. Drawing inspiration from my local surroundings in Northwest Indiana, as well as my travels to the majestic California mountains, I aim to capture the essence of nature and its ever-changing beauty through my unique and enchanting pieces. Join me on this whimsical journey as I invite you to explore the kaleidoscopic wonders of my imagination and the stunning landscapes of our world.
Bio
My work explores movement, emotion, and nature thru vivid colors. I studied fine art in college with a psychology minor. After college, I took a break from art and have started creating and showing art within the past fifteen years.
I am active in the Northwest Indiana Art community and show work in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. I participate in many local events and show my work at several different venues and galleries. I am a member of Tall Grass Art Association, Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists, Shore Shore Arts, and the Chesterton Art Center. I served as the Vice-President of the Diversified Art Visionaries for two years, a non for-profit group that focuses on enriching the community by developing an enthusiastic environment that supports the arts.
I have won several awards in juried art competitions, including Best overall Concept and Best in Category for Space, Time, Energy, an exhibit put on by DAVe, and I also won first place at Studio 659 for one of my fiber art pieces. More recently, in 2023, I won the Best of Show award for the 80th Annual Salon Show put on by South Shore Arts at the Munster Preforming Arts Center. In 2024 I won an Honorable Mention at the Chesterton Women’s Club Exhibit at the Chesterton Art Center, and in 2025 I won an Honorable Mention for the Winter Exhibit thru the Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists at the Chicago Cultural Center. This year I was honored to place third in the Earth and Oceean exhibit at Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights.
More recently I have begun teaching art classes for Alcohol Inks at the Chesterton Art Center, and will also be teaching workshops in Alcohol Inks there and at Tall Grass Arts Association in Park Forest, Illinois.

SKILL LEVEL: Beginners

Known for its vibrant movement and fluid beauty, alcohol ink is a unique medium that allows you to create stunning, abstract artwork with ease. In this hands-on class, you’ll explore the fundamentals of alcohol ink techniques, including how to blend colors, guide movement, and build dynamic compositions. I will walk you through the process step-by-step, helping you gain confidence while encouraging creative exploration. Whether you’re new to art or looking to try something fresh and expressive, this workshop offers a fun and relaxed environment to experiment and create. Participants will combine the beautiful, spontaneous movement of alcohol inks with the finer details of paint pen, adding definition and contrast to create a truly unique finished piece.

SKILL LEVEL: All skill levels are welcome, including beginners
With my guidance, spend the day creating a dreamy, colorful landscape complete with mountains and trees. Students will begin with smaller studies to explore the fluid qualities of alcohol inks, then develop a larger, more refined piece by the end of the workshop. Participants will combine the beautiful, spontaneous movement of alcohol inks with the finer details of paint pen, adding definition and contrast to create a truly unique finished piece.

SKILL LEVEL: Beginners
Beginning level class to learn and practice different techniques in spontaneity and control in alcohol inks. Students will take home 1-3 finished pieces after each class. We will be working on ceramic tile and yupo paper, learning different techniques and styles to guide the inks.
Each class will have a brief lecture, and demo, then we will dive right into the fun!
